Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's team into third place in the division, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.
